Estimates vary but we know mortgage brokers handle at least a third of all home loan applications in New Zealand today, with some estimates going as high as half of all applications. Either way, mortgage brokers are an increasingly popular choice for people looking to borrow money to buy a house. Why is that?

In a recent and totally unscientific survey I asked a handful of clients what the top questions on their mind were when thinking about mortgages. It came down to three things:

  • They wanted a good interest rate
  • They wanted to be sure they got the best mortgage for their situation
  • They wanted someone to help them understand the house buying process, who to talk to and what to do next

When I look at those statements the thing that really stands out to me is that people are looking for a mortgage broker who can give good advice and has experience. And this makes total sense, after all the numbers are pretty big so you want to make sure you’re doing everything right plus buying a house is an emotional thing so having a ‘level head’ working with you can be invaluable.

A mortgage broker generally comes at no cost to you, they can give you options, information and advice and (most importantly) a decent mortgage broker will have clients who happily say good things about them. When was the last time your bank could do all of that?

About Campbell Hastie

Cam is one half of Auckland based mortgage brokers, The Go 2 Guys.

He makes a living by sharing what he knows about mortgages with people, arranging mortgages for people and then insuring people.

He doesn't claim to know everything about mortgages himself which is why he teamed up with David Mercer — hence the ‘2’ in Go 2 Guys.

He writes posts regularly on his blog and has been told he has an ability to share his knowledge in a simple and sometimes memorable way.
